Jacksonville Jaguars Are Ready For The Big Game

By Matt Ryan

The Jacksonville Jaguars are still a fairly new NFL franchise. Jacksonville was one of the last places the NFL thought they would add a franchise, but it has proven to be a profitable decision. Fans, every year, stand by their team by purchasing tickets and merchandise, regardless of how good or bad they may be playing. After a rough year last season, fans are already talking about buying season tickets for 2009.

The NFL was looking for a city to start a new franchise in back in'92. They had their hopes on Charlotte, NC, St. Louis, MO, Baltimore, MD, Memphis, TN, or - their last choice - Jacksonville, FL. Florida already had two pro-football teams; there was really no need to add another.

There were many other reasons that Jacksonville was at the bottom of the list. The city was considered too small to support a professional team, television ratings were dangerously low, and the other cities were better options - overall. However, went put to the test, the city of Jacksonville sold 10,000 tickets in under 10 days - proof that the city could - financially - support an NFL franchise.

The 2009 season will be their 17th year in the league. As of yet, the Jaguars have not made it to a Super Bowl game, but they continually get close. In fact, the made it to the playoffs three times in their first four years - a record in the NFL. In both'96 and'99, the team fought for the AFC Division title - to no prevail but they tried.

The 2007 season proved to be another profitable year for the team as they closed the season with only two losses. Everyone expected this streak to carry into the next season - 2008 - but were proven wrong. The 2008 season ended up being the teams' record worst and is one they wish they could replay.

The Jaguars where cheered for - game after game - by thousands of fans, investors, and even management, but to no prevail. The Jaguars were given plenty of opportunities to cease each game, but something was missing. After the Bengals game, where the Jaguars were beat by a team that had not won a game all season, everyone knew the season would end in disappointment.

The loss to the Bengals pushed the Jaguars in to an aggressive / defensive play mode - one that was not beneficial until one of their last games of the season. When the Jaguars played the Detroit Lions, they won the game by a last minute field goal. This opportunity was missed in many of the earlier games in the season.

With a 5-11 record the Jaguars hung their heads and moved on. The 2009 season brings back many injured players, along with some new blood. Fans are hopeful that the combination of these two advantages will give the Jaguars the edge they need to get back into the game. Ticket sales are expected to be as high - if not higher - as normal, and those who do not rush to the box office may miss their chance to see the Jaguars play - live. - 30214
