Camping at Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys

By Gail Nettles

Bahia Honda State Park has something very uncommon for the Florida Keys. It has a beach. And a really beautiful one as well. Add to it great camping sites and you have got the recipe for a Florida Keys camping paradise. Let's find out why.

Although the Florida Keys are islands, naturally made beaches are very exceptional indeed. Why? Largely for the reason that the turquoise waters that surround the Florida Keys are so calm, the sand doesn't get a chance to build up. Bahia Honda has, hands down, the best beach in the Florida Keys, and probably the loveliest in Florida.

Swimming is quite a popular pastime at Bahia Honda. The calm turquoise waters are warm, in the upper seventies to the low 80s a good amount of the year. And the waters are very clear. Though the beach faces out to the Atlantic Ocean, unless there's a storm out to sea, the waters are tranquil.

Together with swimming, snorkeling is quite a big draw to Bahia Honda State Park. The peaceful, clear waters which invite swimming are great for exploring the undersea world. And if you really want a treat, take a snorkeling tour from Bahia Honda out to Looe Key to visit the amazing coral reef there.

Kayaking, canoeing and boating are also on the list of enjoyable things to do at the park. There's a small marina plus a boat ramp. If you have somehow mislaid your boat, you are able to rent a kayak from the park's concession stand. The serene waters are great for exploring the waterways around the key, especially on the Gulf side.

Don't forget Florida Keys camping. From tents to RVs to renting one of their beach cabins, many sorts of camping are available at Bahia Honda. Here's a caveat: phone ahead to place a reservation for a camping site or especially one of the cabins. As you could imagine, a beach cottage in paradise has quite a waiting list.

Bahia Honda State Park is found in the lower Florida Keys, a bit south and west of Seven Mile Bridge. Just one stay and you'll understand why they call the Florida Keys the American Caribbean. Or just call it Paradise.

So come on down and stay a spell. The weather lovely and the natives are welcoming. And once you're here, you will have to agree that paradise is found at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys.
